The last Saturday of every month · free · open to anyone

Open Saturday

One Saturday a month, an affiliated club in each province opens its bars to anyone who wants to turn up. No entry fee, no membership, no standard to meet before you arrive. The date runs on a rule rather than an announcement, so it never moves. The host club sets the time and picks what kind of session it runs.

02The session

The host decides

The association fixes the date and nothing else. The club hosting picks the time and what kind of session it runs, because a club knows its own park and its own people better than a national body does. Check the board above for what your province is running this month.

  • Open session

Bars are open, coaches are around, train what you want.

The simplest version. The club opens its space, its coaches are on hand, and you train whatever you came to train. Good if you have never done this before and would rather watch for ten minutes than be put in a group.

  • Freestyle

A circle, a bar, and whatever anyone wants to throw.

The club’s athletes take turns on the bar and anyone who wants a go gets one. Nothing is judged and nothing is scored. This is where most people find out what they want to learn next.

  • Sets and reps

A structured session everyone works through together.

The host sets the work and the whole group moves through it together, scaled so a first timer and a national competitor can do the same session side by side.

  • Friendly challenge

Light competition, no entry, no record.

Max reps, a hold for time, a small head to head. It is competition with nothing riding on it, which is the easiest way to find out whether you would enjoy the real thing.

  • Skills clinic

    One movement, coached in progressions.

The host names a movement ahead of the day and coaches it from the bottom up, so the first step is always something you can already do.

  • Something else

The host describes it when they book.

Hosts are not limited to this list. Where a club runs something that does not fit, it names the session itself and that name is what appears on the board.

Who it is for

  • Anyone. There is no level to get to first, and no session on this page is a trial for anything.
  • Under-18s are welcome with a parent or guardian present for the session.
  • You do not need to be a SASWCA member and nobody will push you to become one.
  • Bring water and something you can move in. Most venues are outdoor parks with no lockers, so leave the bag light.

What it is not

This is not a competition and nothing that happens at an Open Saturday goes on a scoresheet. A friendly challenge at one of these is exactly that: friendly. Nothing is submitted, nothing is ranked, and turning up does not enter you into anything.

The scored, judged version of the sport is the competition calendar, run to the published rules.

03Hosting

Book your province

Hosting is open to clubs on the SASWCA register. You take one province for one month, run the session you want to run at the time that suits you, and the association puts it in front of every athlete in your area.

What you get

  • Your mark, your venue and your links on this page for the month you host.
  • The session goes out on the SASWCA feed and to every registered athlete in your province.
  • A permanent numbered entry in the record below, with your club named against it.
  • Photographs from the day go into the SASWCA gallery, credited to you.
  • Athletes standing at your bars who were not there the week before. That is the whole reason this exists.

What you provide

  • A venue with bars. A public calisthenics park is ideal and your own space is fine.
  • The session itself: you choose the type, you set the start and end time, and your coaches run it.
  • Confirmation that you carry indemnity for everyone attending, minors included.
  • A headcount and a few photographs within a week, which is what keeps the record honest.
  • The last Saturday of the month you booked. The date is the one thing you do not choose.

How the slot works

  1. 01Affiliated clubs only. If you are not on the register yet, apply for affiliation first and then book a month.
  2. 02One host per province per month. The first application for an open month takes it, and a second applicant is offered the next open one.
  3. 03A club may host once a quarter at most, so the slot moves between clubs instead of settling on one.
  4. 04Applications close 14 days before the date, so there is time to announce it properly.

Apply for a month

The board reviews applications and replies by email. Nothing appears on the site until your club has confirmed the venue, so an approved slot is a slot that is actually happening.

Not affiliated yet? Register your club first, then come back and book a month.

Only affiliated clubs host. Register your club if yours is not listed.

Your call entirely. The date is the only thing the association fixes.

Bars and coaches, not optimism.

Applications close 14 days before the date. The board replies by email, and nothing goes on the board until you confirm the venue.

04The record

Every session, kept

Nothing to record yet. The first Open Saturday is , and it becomes entry 001. Every session after it keeps its number, its host and its headcount here permanently.

What gets recorded

Date, province, host club and the number of athletes the host counted on the day. The national totals below are the sum of what hosts actually reported, so the figure is a floor rather than an estimate.
